A Brief History of the Round the Island Race

The Round the Island Race was first held in 1931 after Major Cyril Windeler, a member of the Island Sailing Club, proposed a handicap race around the Isle of Wight. What began with just 25 entries has grown into one of the largest yacht races in the world, regularly attracting hundreds of boats and thousands of sailors.

The race covers approximately 50 nautical miles, starting and finishing in Cowes and taking competitors around the entire Isle of Wight. Over the decades it has become renowned for its unique mix of participants, with professional sailors competing alongside cruising yachts, club racers and first-time entrants.

Many famous names have taken part over the years, including Sir Ben Ainslie and former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath aboard his celebrated yacht Morning Cloud. Today, the event remains a true celebration of sailing and seamanship, combining competitive racing with an unforgettable day on the water.

What’s Happening This Year?

The 2026 Round the Island Race takes place on Saturday 11 July 2026. Organisers are expecting another impressive fleet, with hundreds of boats already entered and competitors travelling from across the UK and overseas to take part, including our own Harbour Master on a local Folkboat.

As always, spectators can expect a stunning variety of vessels ranging from family cruisers and club racers to high-performance offshore yachts and multihulls. Weather and tidal conditions will play a major role in shaping the race, creating tactical challenges and plenty of excitement for competitors and onlookers alike.
