Wightlink W Class Ferries - Narrow Channels

LNTM Number 2 of 2024

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the when operating in the Lymington River Wightlink ferries are at times constrained by draught, and at all times can only operate within the navigation channel.

Accordingly, Rule 9 (Narrow Channels) of The Merchant Shipping (Distress Signals and Prevention of Collision) Regulations 1996 applies. In particular:

Rule 9 (a) – A vessel proceeding along the course of a narrow channel or fairway shall keep as near to the outer limit of the channel or fairway which lies on her starboard side as is safe and practical.

Rule 9 (b) – A vessel of less than 20 meters in length or a sailing vessel shall not impede the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within a narrow channel or fairway.

Rule 9 (d) – A vessel shall not cross a narrow channel or fairway if such crossing impedes the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within a channel or fairway.

Please be aware that the ferries are large vessels which can take time to slow down and alter course. They also have a large surface area and in windy conditions slowing down will have an effect on the vessels handling and the amount of thrust required to maintain station or hold a course within the channel. The effect of thruster wash can in turn impact on other smaller craft in the vicinity.

Masters or skippers of vessels under 20 metres in length, sailing vessels or crossing vessels should therefore ensure that any action required to comply with Rules 9 (a), (b) and (d) is taken early and decisively so the Master of the Wightlink ferry is clear of that vessels intentions in good time and so that the ferry does not have to take action as a result of being impeded.
